Evonik expands Rohacell production into Asia

8 February 2016

Evonik Industries AG has launched its first Rohacell structural foam plant in Asia.

The Essen, Germany-based company said the new multi-user-site is located in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park. The plant is Evonik’s third global production facility for Rohacell. The other two are in operation in Darmstadt, Germany, and Mobile, Ala.

The 1,200-square-meter plant broke ground in April 2015 and was completed in nine months.

Rohacell is a rigid foam based on polymethacrylimide used in composite applications.

Evonik Greater China President Claas Klasen expressed his confidence and expectations of success at the inauguration ceremony: “Greater China, as a key growth region for Evonik, continues to contribute to the strong performance of the group. Today, the inauguration of this Rohacell plant celebrates another important step in Evonik’s business development in China.”

The company said the new plant demonstrates its commitment to bring products closer to customers in Asia.

“This Shanghai plant enables us to efficiently provide our products to customers throughout Asia, while supporting them with a local team and convenient service,” said Matthias Kottenhahn, senior vice president and general manager for High Performance Polymers.

Rohacell structural foam products are used worldwide in a variety of industries including aviation, automotive, electronics, medical and sports equipment.

The lightweight material has already been applied in Asia’s aviation industry, including the regional jet ARJ21-700 and also the prototype of China’s first large commercial airliner C919 that is scheduled to enter into commercial service in 2018.
