Guelph to add 100-job plastic shrink wrap manufacturer

22 September 2015

A firm that produces plastic shrink wrap for various consumer products is moving to Guelph.

Safety Seal Plastics expects its Guelph operation to have a 100-person workforce, according to a news release issued by the company.

The business is now based in Hamilton and it's expected to transition to Guelph before the end of the year. Safety Seal Plastics has already acquired what it describes as "a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Guelph to accommodate this new business and future growth."

The location of that building was not disclosed in the announcement. But a plastics industry publication has reported that it's a 50,000-square-foot that had previously been owned pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc.

The development arises amid a purchase by the business of the shrink sleeve component of Jones Packaging Inc.

"It is a very exciting time for Safety Seal Plastics," said Michael Bedrosian, the firm's president and CEO, in the company's release.

The firm now employs about 35 staffers in Hamilton and will be recruiting to have its expanded Guelph operation.

Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie called the firm a "leading edge" company in a statement offered in the company's announcement.

"They will be welcomed, as all businesses are, by rolling out the red carpet. We thank them for choosing Guelph. It's not hard to see why. Our location within Ontario, close to transportation networks, a strong pool of needed employees along with our quality of life in our city will help them thrive," Guthrie said.

"Safety Seal Plastics will be contributing significantly to our ability to attract jobs and investment and is a clear demonstration of why Guelph is a great place to do business," said Kithio Mwanzia, president and CEO of the Guelph Chamber of Commerce, in the release.

Premium HR Solutions in Guelph is working with the firm in its local recruitment efforts.

Safety Seal was established in 1989 to supply tamper-proof bands to pharmaceutical and food industries products. According to its website, its client base includes such firms as: Ocean Spray; E.D. Smith & Sons; McCormick Canada; Unico; Bausch & Lomb; and Pfizer Canada.
