McCalla manufacturing company announces $10M expansion

Plastipak Packaging, Inc., on Thursday announced a $10.4 million expansion that will bring two new manufacturing lines to the company's facility at the Jefferson County Metropolitan Park in McCalla.
The company, which makes plastic bottles for the beverage industry, estimates the expansion will create at least five new jobs. The company currently employs 117 people.
“Plastipak is extremely appreciative of the support it has received from the local community and business organizations,” said William C. Young, president and CEO of Plastipak Holdings. “The Plastipak Team is excited to be able to expand our plant again and to continue to serve our regional customers with high quality products that are manufactured in the state of Alabama.”
The Jefferson County Commission approved statutory tax abatements for the project, valued at more than $427,000 over 10 years.
“Plastipak is a long-time and highly valued investor in the county’s JeffMet Business Park,” Jefferson County Commissioner David Carrington said. “This business expansion project brings additional investment and jobs to western Jefferson County.”
The company began operating in Birmingham in 2003, and is a subsidiary of the Michigan-based Plastipak Holdings, Inc.
