Sabic introduces new caps and closures materials

Saudi Arabia-based chemicals firm Sabic has unveiled new materials and solutions for drink, food and non-food packaging caps and closures at the Plastic Closures Innovations Conference in Berlin, Germany.

The company has developed new multi-modal grade of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with enhanced organoleptics.

Sabic HDPE CCX027C polymer is said to combine an advanced environmental stress cracking resistance (ESCR) with good flow, enabling cap manufacturers to develop very lightweight closures.

The new polymer shows better shear thinning even at low MFI, and its flow characteristics during injection molding are similar to unimodal HDPE with an MFI more than three times higher.

Sabic global caps and closures segment leader Hans Pierik said: “With our extensive range of polyethylenes and polypropylenes, SABIC has already built a strong position in caps and closures.

“But the Caps & Closure market is growing and changing all the time, and we are moving quickly to respond to current and future developments.”

Sabic said it intends to extend its application coverage across food and beverage and non-food areas, including detergents, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Pierik further added: “SABIC’s Caps & Closure portfolio spans all types of polyethylenes and polypropylene (PE, PP), through to engineering plastics like polycarbonate.”

As part of its sustainability measures, the company is reducing processing temperatures to help processors save energy and reduce cycle times. The advancement of organoleptics will also enable caps to avoid effect on the taste of packaging contents.

In addition, the firm is partly replacing crude oil with renewable feedstocks in its production of polyethylenes and polypropylenes.

In November 2017, Sabic expanded its global foam portfolio with the introduction of new PP- Ultra Melt Strength (UMS) resin.
