Struthers starts campaign for new turf, track and baseball field

For years, the Struthers high school baseball and softball teams have had to leave campus for practice, and even home games. Now, there is a campaign looking to bring them back to their home field.

The Struthers school board started the Struthers Stadium Capital Campaign Tuesday to fund a two-phase plan to get new turf and a track at the football field and construct a brand new baseball field where the football practice field is now.

The board has been saving money for the project, but Phase A alone, which is the track and turf, costs $1 million. The fundraising campaign allows for the community to pitch in.

Superintendent Pete Pirone said the fields are needed to keep the kids up to date with the rest of the conference, and they are excited to be on their home field.

“There are a lot of cost savings that go into artificial turf. You know, you think of upfront costs, but you don’t necessarily think of all the savings in man hours to get ready for a Friday night football game,” Pirone said.

The track will continue to be open to the community to use.

Phase A is expected to begin at the start of the new year and should be complete by the 2019 football season.

They plan to begin Phase A at the start of the new year and have it ready by the 2019 football season.
