Ukrainian packaging manufacturer Ukrplastic, which claims it is Eastern Europe’s largest maker of flexible packaging materials for food, tobacco and pharmaceutical industries, is building a new facility to cater to the European Union market.

A company executive disclosed the investment in an interview at a recent industry conference, but declined to say where the facility would be built. The company has already bought the land.

“The plant would likely… be functional in the next 12 to 18 months,” said Oleg Rozhko, development director of the Kiev-based firm. “We have taken the land and ordered equipment for the plant.”

He spoke at the 4th Speciality Films and Flexible Packaging Global Conference, held 15-16 September in Mumbai. Rozhko said it would be the company’s first facility outside of its Kiev base.

The company said it’s one of Europe’s 20 largest manufacturers and suppliers of flexible packaging, and exports more than 50% of its sales. It manufactures coextruded film in up to 11 layers, along with BOPP film, metallisation, adhesive lamination and other printing technologies.

In June, Ukrplastics signed a memorandum of intent with Dow Chemical to strengthen their long-term partnership and development of flexible packaging materials.

Founded in 1927, the company exports to Russia and other Commonwealth of Independent States countries, Central and Eastern Europe, and Africa.
