ARKEMA Continues to Lower the Carbon Footprint of the Global Production of Its Bio-Based Polyamide 11 Chain

9 October 2023

The Group has achieved a significant reduction of 46% in the carbon footprint of its bio-based Rilsan® polyamide 11 grades, bringing it to less than 2 kg CO2e/kg (1). This achievement has been made possible through the use of renewable or low-carbon energy sources and several energy efficiency improvements at its production facilities. This represents an improvement of approximately 70% compared to traditional polyamide resins produced from fossil-based raw materials and conventional energy sources.

Rilsan® polyamide 11 is derived entirely from renewable castor seeds, making it 100% segregated bio-based. Furthermore, the amino 11 monomer and the downstream polymers are produced using a significant proportion of low-carbon and renewable energy sources, both in terms of electricity and combustible fuels. Arkema recently entered into a biomethane supply agreement with ENGIE in France and has implemented various energy efficiency improvements in its polyamide 11 production sites over the past year.

Erwoan Pezron, Senior Vice President of Arkema's High-Performance Polymers, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, "This is an important step for our customers and the markets we serve. The lower carbon footprint we announce today applies to our entire global production, not just a particular set of grades or a certain location. This allows our customers to deliver on their commitment to decarbonize and to develop more sustainable products at scale. Furthermore, we have a strong action plan in place to further decarbonize this range, with a 2030 target to reduce the carbon footprint by a further 50%. Our objective is to continue to offer our customers high-performance materials with one of the lowest carbon footprints in the market."

This accomplishment represents a significant advancement in Arkema's ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to lower climate change impact through sustainable raw materials, energy sources, and manufacturing processes.

Leveraging its expertise in materials science, Arkema offers a portfolio of cutting-edge technologies to meet the growing demand for new and sustainable materials. With the goal of becoming a pure player in Specialty Materials by 2024, the Group is organized into three complementary and highly innovative segments dedicated to Specialty Materials: Adhesive Solutions, Advanced Materials, and Coating Solutions, which accounted for approximately 91% of Group sales in 2022. Additionally, Arkema operates a competitive Intermediates segment. Arkema's technological solutions address various challenges, including those related to new energies, access to water, recycling, urbanization, and mobility. The Group maintains a continuous dialogue with its stakeholders and reported sales of approximately €11.5 billion in 2022. Arkema operates in approximately 55 countries and has a global workforce of 21,100 employees.
