Braskem and SCG Chemicals join forces to advance in the bio-based Ethylene project in Thailand

18 August 2023

Braskem, a leading global biopolymer producer, and SCG Chemicals, a prominent petrochemical company in Thailand and Southeast Asia, have entered into a joint venture agreement to establish Braskem Siam Company Limited. This collaboration, pending regulatory clearance and final investment decisions, aims to produce bio-ethylene from bio-ethanol dehydration and commercialize I’m green™ bio-based polyethylene using the EtE EverGreen™ technology, a result of the partnership between Lummus Technology LLC and Braskem B.V.

I’m green™ bio-based polyethylene is a sustainable plastic derived from renewable raw materials like ethanol from sugar cane, as opposed to traditional fossil feedstocks. This reduces the plastic's carbon footprint, contributing to the fight against climate change. The polyethylene is employed in various applications such as packaging for food and beverages, personal and home care products, toys, houseware, and plastic bags. It can also be recycled, mechanically or chemically, just like regular polyethylene.

The bio-ethylene plant, the first of its kind outside Brazil, will enable the production of I’m green™ bio-based polyethylene. This plant in Thailand will nearly double the existing capacity of I’m green™ bio-based polyethylene, catering to the growing global demand for biopolymers, especially in Asia where the demand for sustainable products is rapidly increasing.

The joint venture capitalizes on Braskem's expertise in bio-based plastics and SCG Chemicals' presence in the Asian market and polyethylene production. Braskem brings proven technology, operational experience in ethanol dehydration, and the I'm green™ brand's global strength. SCG Chemicals contributes its knowledge in high-quality polyethylene grades, operational excellence in polyethylene manufacturing, and market reach in Southeast Asia.

Roberto Bischoff, CEO of Braskem, stated that the partnership aligns with Braskem's commitment to producing 1 million tons of green products by 2030, replacing fossil feedstock with renewable sources to reduce the industry's carbon footprint. Tanawong Areeratchakul, CEO and President of SCG Chemicals, emphasized that this collaboration is in line with SCGC's strategy to expand its green business, responding to the growing demand for environmentally friendly plastics, particularly in Asia and Europe.

The joint venture exemplifies the Bio-Circular-Green Economy (BCG) model in Thailand, focusing on sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
