Circular Economy: TotalEnergies to Build a New Plastic Recycling Unit at the Grandpuits Zero-Crude Platform

21 September 2023

TotalEnergies has unveiled plans to construct a new mechanical recycling unit for plastic waste at its Grandpuits site southeast of Paris. This investment aligns with TotalEnergies' ambition to promote low-carbon energy and the circular economy. The unit is expected to be operational in 2026 and will produce up to 30,000 tons annually of high-value compounds containing up to 50% recycled plastic material.

In addition to the mechanical recycling unit, TotalEnergies will establish a dedicated center that will offer technical assistance to customers and develop new products to support the commercialization of the new range of hybrid compounds.

This expansion of its recycled polymer offerings will target the high-performance packaging market, particularly in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Bernard Pinatel, President of Refining & Chemicals at TotalEnergies, highlighted the significance of this investment in the context of the company's commitment to the circular economy and its goal to achieve 1 million tons of circular polymers by 2030. He also noted that the project would maintain 250 jobs at the Grandpuits site.

The Grandpuits project represents TotalEnergies' efforts to transition to low-carbon energy and a circular economy. It includes the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), biomethane production, advanced and mechanical recycling, and green electricity generation. This "zero-crude" project is part of TotalEnergies' initiative to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and involves various forward-looking activities in biomass, renewables, and circular economy practices.
