Coburn Technologies, SDC Technologies Launch Photochromic Lens Processing System for Optical Labs

6 October 2023

Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. has announced that its U.S.-based group companies, SDC Technologies, Inc. (Irvine, California; President & CEO: Richard CHANG) and Coburn Technologies, Inc. (South Windsor, Connecticut; President: Alex INCERA), have introduced a new photochromic lens*1 processing system for optical labs, effective September 2023.

This innovative system represents a collaborative effort between Coburn and SDC, capitalizing on Coburn's expertise in coating equipment and SDC's proficiency in coatings.

Currently, optical labs maintain substantial inventories of photochromic lenses to ensure compatibility with various materials and colors. This is done to supply glasses retailers with products that meet their specific needs promptly. However, the introduction of this new system will revolutionize the industry by enabling on-demand production of photochromic lenses. This will help optical labs streamline their inventories, significantly enhancing their productivity. Furthermore, photochromic lenses produced using this system exhibit rapid darkening and lightening properties, along with outstanding performance metrics such as abrasion resistance.

Alex INCERA, President of Coburn, remarked, "This new system, a synergy of SDC and Coburn's strengths, will offer customers innovative lens material processing solutions. We are committed to continually delivering new value to optical labs worldwide through our collaborative efforts."
