Dow launches lower carbon, bio-based, and circular propylene glycol solutions in Europe

22 September 2023

Dow (NYSE: DOW) has introduced a new range of propylene glycol (PG) solutions in Europe, featuring alternative feedstocks that are lower in carbon, bio-based, and circular in nature. These sustainable solutions offer customers the ability to deliver end-products to a wide range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and food, while providing third-party validated sustainability benefits through a mass balance approach. This approach tracks the flow of sustainable raw materials used in PG production throughout a complex value chain, and it has received ISCC PLUS certification.

Andrew Jones, Global Business Director of Dow CAV & POPG, stated, "We recognize demand has increased for the use of renewable materials to reduce carbon and enable circularity. By applying our low carbon, bio-based, and advanced recycling technologies, we are making this a reality for PG. Our customers will benefit from the same high-quality performance with a more sustainable material."

The new sustainable propylene glycol product lines in Europe include:

  1. Propylene Glycol RDC featuring Decarbia™ reduced carbon solutions from renewable energy sources.
  2. Propylene Glycol REN featuring Ecolibrium™ bio-based technology from second-generation bio-based raw materials.
  3. Propylene Glycol CIR featuring Renuva™ recycled content from post-consumer waste streams.

These sustainable PG solutions are suitable for various applications in industries such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, textiles, and food. Dow plans to launch equivalent products in other regions of the world in the coming months.

Dow's use of the mass balance approach allows for the integration of alternative feedstocks, with independent, external verification playing a crucial role. This approach enables the tracking and attribution of sustainable materials through complex value chains without altering the production process.

ISCC (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) is a globally recognized certification standard for fully traceable and environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable supply chains. The propylene glycol plant in Stade, Germany, has achieved ISCC PLUS certification in Europe.

This initiative is part of Dow's ongoing efforts to embed sustainability into every stage of a product's lifecycle, as the company progresses towards a low-carbon and circular future.
