DuPont Introduces First Ion Exchange Resin for Green Hydrogen Production

27 September 2023

DuPont (NYSE: DD) has unveiled its inaugural product dedicated to the production of green hydrogen – the DuPont™ AmberLite™ P2X110 Ion Exchange Resin. This specialized ion exchange resin has been developed to facilitate the production of hydrogen from water, tailored to the distinct chemistry of electrolyzer loops.

Alan Chan, Global Vice President and General Manager of DuPont Water Solutions, highlighted the significance of exploring new sources of clean energy, with green hydrogen playing a pivotal role in substantially reducing global carbon emissions. He stated, "At DuPont Water Solutions, we are very excited to introduce our AmberLite™ P2X110 Ion Exchange Resin in support of these trends toward electrification and decarbonization."

Green hydrogen, produced from water through renewable energy-powered electrolysis, holds immense potential in the energy transition. It can contribute to decarbonizing various sectors such as transportation, heating, energy generation, and serve as a cleaner feedstock. Electrolysis, the process of splitting water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen gas using electricity, relies on high-purity water as the essential feedstock.

Verónica Garcia Molina, Global Market Leader for Industrial Water & Energy at DuPont Water Solutions, emphasized their versatile portfolio's ability to generate the high-purity water required for electrolyzers. DuPont's wide range of water technologies, including ultrafiltration, ion exchange, biofouling prevention, reverse osmosis, and electrodeionization solutions, plays a pivotal role in this process. The introduction of the AmberLite™ P2X110 Ion Exchange Resin marks DuPont's first step into the Green Hydrogen market.

The AmberLite™ P2X110 Ion Exchange Resin is engineered to withstand the thermal and chemical challenges posed within an electrolyzer. Its formulation ensures durable and consistent water quality, preventing the accumulation of contaminants in the electrolyzer loop. These tailored features, coupled with enhanced removal capacity, provide a distinctive option for electrolyzers, delivering extended service life compared to generic resins available in the industry.

DuPont's water technologies are instrumental in purifying over 50 million gallons of water every minute worldwide, supporting water reuse, recycling, desalination, and ensuring safe access to ground and surface water. Through an extensive portfolio encompassing membranes, resins, and systems, DuPont addresses various water and sustainability challenges faced by industrial users and water treatment municipalities. Their solutions encompass technologies such as reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, ion exchange resins (IEX), ultrafiltration (UF), electrodeionization (EDI), nanofiltration (NF), membrane bioreactor systems (MBR), membrane aerated biofilm reactors (MABR), and closed-circuit reverse osmosis (CCRO) systems.
