Freepoint Eco-Systems to Construct Advanced Recycling Facility in Arizona

21 September 2023

Freepoint Eco-Systems LLC (Freepoint) has unveiled plans to develop a commercial-scale advanced plastics recycling facility in Eloy, Arizona. The facility, certified by ISCC Plus, will focus on recycling end-of-life waste plastics that would otherwise go to landfills or incineration. It will cover 40 acres of currently undeveloped land and have the capacity to recycle approximately 180,000 tons of waste plastic annually, positioning it as one of the largest advanced recycling facilities globally.

Jeff McMahon, Managing Director of Freepoint, emphasized the positive impact the facility will have on plastic recycling, the local community, job creation, and greenhouse gas reduction. Freepoint employs established technology to convert waste plastic into feedstock for producing new plastic products. This process not only reduces plastic waste but also lessens the need for oil drilling, leaving more oil in the ground. Moreover, the carbon footprint of plastic produced through Freepoint's recycling process will be up to 90% lower than that of plastic made directly from fossil fuels.

The construction of Freepoint's flagship advanced recycling facility in Hebron, Ohio, is currently underway, with commercial operations expected to commence in the second half of 2024.

During the construction phase in 2024/25, Freepoint will create 200 jobs in Arizona, and once the facility begins commercial operations, it will provide approximately 100 full-time circular economy jobs. The Arizona Commerce Authority has recognized Freepoint for its role in bringing new investments and high-quality jobs to the state.

Eloy Mayor Micah Powell expressed satisfaction with the project, emphasizing the importance of sustainable, green jobs in the local economy. Freepoint's initiative not only creates quality jobs but also benefits the Eloy economy and the environment by recycling plastics.

Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority, highlighted the significance of Freepoint's advanced recycling facility for Pinal County and rural Arizona, positioning the state as a sustainability leader and driving economic growth.

Commercial operations at the Eloy, Arizona facility are expected to commence in the first half of 2026.
