Globe releases enhanced environmental policy, takes strong stance on circularity and responsible production and consumption

21 August 2023

Prominent Philippine digital solutions platform, Globe, has unveiled an updated Environmental Sustainability Policy that underscores the significance of circularity in its efforts to advocate sustainable consumption, carbon reduction, responsible production, efficient resource use, and comprehensive waste management strategies.

This enhanced policy reflects the Philippines' Extended Producer Responsibility Act of 2022, which mandates substantial corporations to recover 20% of their plastic output from the market in 2022, with the aim of increasing this recovery rate to 80% by 2028.

Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer of Globe Group, remarked, "Globe stands at the forefront of adopting sustainable practices in our operations. We are taking this a notch higher with an enhanced environmental policy on circularity which aligns our processes and products with the call for more responsible consumption."

Among the initiatives launched by the company to promote circularity are:

  • Deployment of Eco-SIM cards made entirely from recycled materials for new postpaid accounts in 2022.
  • Replacement of nearly five million traditional tarpaulins with eco-friendlier stone paper.
  • Introduction of a new packaging design for Globe's GFiber Prepaid WiFi product line, aiming to transition more of its Globe At Home products to recyclable and upcyclable materials. This innovative packaging can be repurposed into a laptop stand, enhancing its longevity.
  • Implementation of the "'Wag sa Single-Use Plastic" (WasSUP) program, encouraging plastic reduction among employees and partners, standardizing cashless transactions, and promoting reusable containers in the company's cafeteria.

Furthermore, Globe has made strides in e-waste management and recycling:

  • Contributed to the GSMA's Strategy Paper on Circular Economy for Mobile Devices.
  • Established the E-Waste Zero Program that has recycled over 1.8 million kilograms of electronic waste since 2014.
  • Established a partnership with CompAsia to remarket old employee service units rather than discarding them.

To spread awareness and foster responsible environmental practices, Globe has launched the online learning platform Camp Kalikasan in partnership with WWF-Philippines. The platform offers interactive exercises and learning modules on topics such as waste management, energy efficiency, climate change, and biodiversity.

Crisanto emphasized, "More than digital solutions, we give our customers and other stakeholders the tools and knowledge to continue to practice sustainability."
