Kia partner, The Ocean Cleanup, delivers record 55-ton ocean plastic haul

29 August 2023

Kia has unveiled plans to incorporate recycled plastic from a massive 55-ton haul retrieved from the Pacific Ocean into its upcoming electric vehicle (EV) models. This impressive quantity of plastic, which was collected by Kia's global partner, The Ocean Cleanup, signifies a pivotal step in their ongoing seven-year collaboration that began in April 2022. This collaboration is a key component of Kia's transformation into a prominent provider of sustainable mobility solutions.

The Ocean Cleanup, an international non-profit initiative focused on eliminating plastic from the oceans, successfully retrieved the plastic collection near Victoria, Vancouver Island, Canada. The unprecedented amount of plastic was collected using The Ocean Cleanup's System 002 extraction technology, after a journey through the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP).

The recycling process for this plastic haul is set to commence soon, and Kia intends to incorporate a portion of the recycled material into its upcoming vehicle models. This initiative aligns with Kia's strong commitment to offering sustainable mobility solutions that make a significant impact on achieving large-scale sustainability goals.

Charles Ryu, Senior Vice President and Head of the Global Brand & CX Division at Kia Corp., emphasized the significance of this achievement in terms of providing scalable sustainable solutions through technology. Ryu also highlighted how initiatives like this are in perfect harmony with Kia's overarching strategy to become a leader in sustainable mobility solutions, aligning with their Plan S strategy that prioritizes customer needs and environmental stewardship as responsible corporate citizens.
