Lummus and Biohydrogen Technologies Establish Partnership to Develop and Deploy Blue Hydrogen Technology

22 August 2023

Lummus Technology, a global leader in process technologies and value-focused energy solutions, has entered into a collaborative agreement with Biohydrogen Technologies to develop and deploy advanced synthesis gas reactor technology, primarily aimed at producing blue hydrogen.

The Green Circle division of Lummus will leverage its hydrogen and synthesis gas plant design expertise, as well as proficiency in reactor scale-up, design, and proprietary equipment supply, to support Biohydrogen Technologies. This technology offers an economically viable solution for large-scale blue hydrogen production. It sets itself apart from other potential solutions due to its higher thermal efficiency, lower capital costs, compact footprint, and capability to capture over 99% of carbon dioxide at pressure.

Leon de Bruyn, President and CEO of Lummus Technology, commented, "As the world seeks ways to generate significant quantities of hydrogen for energy use while reducing CO2 emissions, Lummus is pleased to collaborate with Biohydrogen Technologies to address this crucial challenge for our industry and society. Through this partnership, we aim to further develop and introduce decarbonized solutions to the market."

Geoff Weedon, CEO of Biohydrogen Technologies, stated, "The synergy between Biohydrogen Technologies' intellectual property and Green Circle / Lummus Technology's design, engineering, and licensing expertise will soon bring about a practical reality in bulk hydrogen production from natural gas with a thermal efficiency of 90% (LCV) and 99% CO2 capture."

Green Circle represents Lummus Technology's dedicated efforts to seize new opportunities in the energy transition and circular economy. With expertise ranging from processing solid waste containing plastics to refining renewable bio-based feedstocks into valuable chemicals, polymers, and fuels, Green Circle aims to decarbonize refinery and petrochemical assets, enhance blue hydrogen and biofuel production, and advance industrial wastewater treatment.
