LyondellBasell Demonstrates Commitment to Sustainability with Launch of +LC (Low Carbon) Solutions

26 September 2023

LyondellBasell has unveiled a new range of Intermediates and Derivatives (I&D) chemicals called +LC (Low Carbon) solutions, expanding its sustainable product offerings. These +LC solutions are produced using an International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS certified mass balance methodology, sourced from recycled and renewable feedstocks. They are designed to help businesses achieve their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goals while maintaining high-quality applications crucial for sustainable living. Compared to fossil-based alternatives, the +LC solutions offer a lower carbon footprint.

Kimberly Foley, Executive Vice President of I&D and Refining at LyondellBasell, emphasized the company's commitment to sustainability, stating that the +LC solutions represent a critical step for customers as they work toward ambitious GHG emissions reduction targets and product circularity. These low-carbon solutions utilize renewable, bio-based, and recycled feedstocks, enabling customers to reduce their Scope 3 GHG emissions.

LyondellBasell, known for its 70-year legacy of innovation and quality in the I&D sector, is enhancing its portfolio with the introduction of the +LC product range. This range includes key I&D products like styrene monomers, ethylene, and propylene oxide (PO), with applications spanning multiple sectors, from insulation materials to automotive and consumer goods. This announcement follows the recent startup of LyondellBasell's propylene oxide and tertiary butyl alcohol (PO/TBA) plant in Texas, reinforcing the company's position as a global I&D sector leader with significant annual production capacities.

Every +LC product is accompanied by an ISCC+ mass balance certificate, ensuring traceability throughout the value chain. The mass balance approach allows renewable and recycled feedstocks to be attributed to the final product when blended with conventional raw materials during production. Additionally, Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) data are available for these products, enabling businesses to directly compare the carbon footprints of +LC solutions with traditional fossil-based counterparts. By opting for +LC products, businesses can seamlessly integrate sustainability into their operations without compromising performance, demonstrating a balanced approach to meeting both functional requirements and sustainability objectives.

The +LC solutions are currently available in Europe and the Americas, with plans for expansion into Asia in early 2024. Offering products based on renewable and recycled feedstocks as alternatives to fossil feedstocks contributes to the preservation of fossil resources and the reduction of GHG emissions from feedstock production.
