Origin Materials Unveils Eco-Friendly PET Bottle Caps, Pioneering "All PET Mono-Material" Bottle and Cap Solutions, a Landmark Achievement in Recycling and Circularity

7 August 2023

Origin Materials, Inc., a global leader in carbon-negative materials, dedicated to propelling the world's shift towards sustainable materials, has unveiled a groundbreaking achievement - the creation of "all PET" (polyethylene terephthalate) bottle caps. This innovation paves the way for achieving "100% recycled PET" from cap to bottle, thereby significantly enhancing post-consumer recycling processes.

Distinguishing itself from conventional options, Origin's PET caps exhibit superior sustainability characteristics. They can be crafted from various PET sources, ranging from recycled PET to Origin's cutting-edge 100% bio-based, carbon-negative virgin PET. In terms of preserving freshness and sustainability, PET offers superior oxygen and CO2 barrier properties compared to commonly used materials like HDPE and PP for caps.

At the core of this advancement lies Origin's patent-pending design and manufacturing methodology, which facilitates the creation of "mono-material" products. These items are constructed from a single type of material, simplifying recycling procedures in contrast to complex multi-material products. This development is highly significant in the realm of consumer packaged goods, effectively promoting recycling initiatives.

John Bissell, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Origin Materials, expressed, "We recognized a global sustainability challenge and seized the opportunity to address it head-on. An all-PET bottle and cap system is a logical evolution in beverage packaging and recycling. Our process enables us to produce caps using 100% recycled PET or 100% bio-based PET, offering vital sustainability and potential performance advantages for our clientele."

Origin's revolutionary stride is projected to address the lucrative $65 billion caps and closures market, forecasted to grow to $96 billion by 2030.

Bissell added, "This achievement is the result of bringing together some of the world's most brilliant materials and polymer scientists and engineers. Our team's ingenuity triumphed in addressing the need for a mono-material solution. I am immensely proud that our mastery in PET led to this remarkable advancement in recycling."

Furthermore, the rising trend of cap tethering mandates, aimed at promoting bottle recoverability and recyclability, could drive demand for Origin's innovative caps and closures. These mandates necessitate caps to remain securely fastened to bottles throughout their lifecycle, ultimately reducing plastic pollution on beaches and in oceans. While conventional caps require separation from PET bottles during recycling, Origin's PET caps can be conveniently recycled as part of the tethered containers, streamlining the recycling process.

In summary, Origin Materials' transformative PET bottle caps represent a significant leap forward in sustainable beverage packaging, poised to redefine recycling practices and contribute to a more environmentally responsible future.
