Polyplastics' New DURAFIDE (R) PPS Grade Delivers Exceptional Heat Resistance for EV Lithium-ion Batteries

The Polyplastics Group, a prominent global supplier of engineering thermoplastics, has introduced DURAFIDE (R) PPS 6150T73, a high-performance material designed to offer exceptional heat resistance and superior thermal and electrical insulation properties for lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs).

DURAFIDE (R) PPS 6150T73 represents Polyplastics' latest advancement aimed at meeting the evolving needs of the electric vehicle industry. This material significantly enhances thermal and electrical insulation properties during thermal runaway events without the need for inorganic insulating sheet structures. Even when exposed to environments at 1,000°C for 30 minutes, the material maintains its insulation properties for busbars and module covers.

As the automotive industry shifts from traditional internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles, the heat generated by today's Li-ion batteries (LIBs) can pose safety challenges, particularly in the event of thermal runaway caused by accidents or other disturbances. During thermal runaway, a LIB cell can reach temperatures between 800°C to 1,000°C, and the emitted gas can reach temperatures between 700°C to 800°C. Managing energy transfer during thermal runaway is crucial to prevent further escalation of the situation. Historically, structural insulative sheets and plates were employed to mitigate energy transfer between cells. However, these components added weight and occupied space due to the increased number of parts.

In addition to its exceptional heat resistance, DURAFIDE (R) PPS 6150T73 boasts optimal characteristics for various components, including module covers and busbars. This high-purity linear PPS material offers high toughness, excellent impact strength, and low levels of ionic impurities (extracted components). The material's natural color is close to white, and it can be tinted as needed.
