The Maize and Blue Embraces Green for the Recycle Bowl Showdown

19 September 2023

On September 23rd, an extraordinary event will unfold within the iconic confines of Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor and Neyland Stadium in Knoxville. This event, known as the "Recycle Bowl," is not your typical sports competition but a meaningful endeavor with a global resonance. It unites two powerhouse collegiate teams, the Michigan Wolverines and the Tennessee Volunteers, in a spirited battle to promote sustainability and boost recycling rates.

The Recycle Bowl showcases the Michigan Wolverines and the Tennessee Volunteers engaging in a friendly rivalry to see which team can recycle the most during their respective games, held simultaneously in their home stadiums. The stakes are not just bragging rights; there's also the opportunity to set a new world record. This unique occasion sees these collegiate sports giants become champions off the field by championing a cause that all fans can rally behind: recycling.

In the 2022 season, the University of Tennessee set a world record for the "World's Largest College Recycling Event" by collecting 38,452.2 pounds of reused or recyclable materials during their November 12th home game. When the 2023 season rolled around, they threw down the gauntlet and challenged the University of Michigan and its fan base.

Michigan Stadium, often referred to as "The Big House," is a zero-waste facility, exemplifying U of M's strong commitment to sustainability in education, research, and operations. The stadium has a 20-year tradition of recycling and is dedicated to diverting recyclable and compostable materials away from landfills. In fact, Waste 360 recently featured Michigan Stadium as one of the top college football stadiums in the country for its recycling efforts. The stadium's approach includes clear signage directing attendees to recycling and composting containers, serving food and beverages in compostable containers, and post-game waste sorting to ensure materials are sent to the proper facilities.

Participating in the Recycle Bowl on September 23rd is simple for fans:

  1. Attend the home game against Rutgers.
  2. Deposit each plastic, paper, aluminum, cardboard, and compostable product you use during the game into the appropriate recycling or compost bins.
  3. Extend these habits to recycling at home.

Michigan Stadium makes recycling easy, and fans are encouraged to join in the effort during the "Recycle Bowl" and throughout the football season.

"Michigan Athletics is pleased to partner with the University of Tennessee in the Recycle Bowl," said Kurt Svoboda, Associate Athletic Director for External Communications and Public Relations. "Our efforts in Ann Arbor are specifically aimed at supporting our campus-wide sustainability effort known as Planet Blue and achieving our zero-waste goal."

The Recycle Bowl enjoys the support of several dedicated corporate partners, including Amcor, Absopure, Clean Tech, Husky, LyondellBasell, The Plastic Industry Association, Plastipak, and the National Association for PET Container Resources. This event serves as a powerful reminder that when we all recycle  whether at home, at the tailgate, or at the game the planet is the ultimate winner.
