Rebound Plastic Exchange supports Germany in the circulation of recycled plastics
12 December 2022
Rebound Plastic Exchange, a global B2B digital trading platform for recycled plastics, is ready to help Germany achieve circularity in recycled plastics. Although Germany is known for its leading recycling projects and reliable waste management system, it remains one of the continent's largest producers of packaging waste, particularly plastic 1 . According to the Federal Statistical Office 2 , the total amount of packaging waste increased by 9.3% in 2020 at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Germany, recycling rates have been relatively high for decades. With the Packaging Ordinance, Germany became the first country to introduce mandatory requirements for manufacturers to recycle and recover sales 3 . “If aggregators aren't able to find demand to sell their plastic raw materials, it doesn't really matter what percentage of plastic waste is separated for recycling. Rebound Plastic connects value chain actors with trusted, quality-assured processes," stated Maryam Al Mansoori , General Manager, Rebound Plastic Exchange.
Rebound Plastic Exchange promises quality assurance and trust by vetting members in the marketplace and peer reviewing stock exchange listings, helping the industry meet its goals and save the environment from plastic. Active buyers and sellers on the Rebound Plastic Exchange come from more than 21 countries, helping to source plastic raw materials at the preferred price points.
Cooperation to promote circulation in the main importing countries
In 2017, more than 340,000 tons of plastic waste were sent from Germany to China 4 . Exports of German plastic waste to India, Malaysia and Indonesia skyrocketed in early 2018. 5
In response to its growth in plastics manufacturing and exports, Germany has engaged in several cooperation projects with eight major Southeast Asian markets 6 . In addition, Germany calibrates Thailand's know-how to support neighboring countries, namely Laos , Cambodia, Vietnam and Bhutan , and to incentivize sustainable public procurement (SPP) and the eco-label 7 .
The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) has already launched the Scaling SCP project in Thailand , Malaysia , Indonesia and the Philippines in close cooperation with its sister project SCP Outreach and the Cooperation Measures for the Prevention of Single-Use Plastics in Southeast Asia (CAP SEA) 8 performed.
Additionally, a new partnership between Indonesian organization RIO Oceans Integrity and German company ASCON Resource Management Holding 9 aims to recycle more than 3 million kg of plastic by 2023.
Rebound Plastic Exchange will complement Germany's partnership with ASEAN member states, encouraging scalable, solution-oriented joint strategies while supporting their commitments to the Basel Convention changes related to plastics trade.
Industry representatives, whether buyers or sellers of recycled plastics, can register for free on the Rebound Plastic Exchange and gain access to a global market for quality-assured raw materials.
