Shin-Etsu Chemical has developed a molded silicone rubber that achieves a lower weight for rubber molded products

19 November 2020

Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo, President, Yasuhiko Saito) has now developed a new form of low-density silicone rubber that makes lighter rubber molded products. Shin-Etsu is the first in the industry to develop this type of molded silicone rubber using LIMS (Liquid Injection Molding System) materials.

The demand for lighter rubber molded products is growing in many industries such as automobiles and transportation vehicles such as airplanes, as well as in other areas such as portable devices. With the development of lighter products, a further expansion of silicone rubber applications is expected.

Heretofore, in order to produce lighter silicone rubber, a foaming agent has been added to grindable silicone rubber and shaped into a spongy shape. However, no foam concentrate is required for our new product. Also, because it can be molded with our advanced LIMS, it can meet mold maker demand for superior quality and productivity improvements.

This new product is available in type types: a low density / high strength type * 1 and a very low density type * 2. Both can enable continuous automatic molding through the use of an injection molding machine and thus efficiently produce high quality rubber molded products, thereby not only improving productivity but also saving energy.

Shin-Etsu Chemical has a technical center for the production of silicone rubber. This Shin-Etsu Molding Technical Laboratory, located in Higashimatsuyama City, Saitama Prefecture, Japan, is doing demonstrations of molding with our new products. At the same time, we are working on improving mold technology and improving technical service for our customers.

Silicone rubber combines many superior properties such as excellent heat resistance, cold resistance, weather resistance, and stable electrical insulation properties, all of which cannot be found in ordinary organic rubber. Because of this, it is used in a wide variety of applications, such as automobiles, electronic electronic devices, OA devices, household appliances, and everyday products.

Shin-Etsu uses the superior product quality and technological strengths of Shin-Etsu Chemical as well as our system for detailed response to customer requests and will continue to strive to meet the requirements of the diversifying market in the future.

* 1 Low density / high strength type: Compared to conventional silicone rubber molded parts, this new type of product achieves a weight reduction of about 20 to 30%.

* 2 Type with very low density: Compared to conventional silicone rubber molded parts, this new type of product achieves a weight reduction of around 50 to 60%.
