Introduction:

Covestro has announced a strategic MDI investment programme to strengthen its global position and improve long-term supply security for customers worldwide. The programme includes preparations for a new MDI production train with an annual capacity of 660 kilotonnes at the Covestro Integrated Site Shanghai in China, with start-up targeted for the end of the decade. Covestro is also conducting a feasibility study for a plant of similar scale in the United Arab Emirates.

The China project will include upstream plants and supporting infrastructure, using Covestro’s proprietary AdiP technology to reduce energy consumption and support net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

Covestro is conducting a feasibility study for a similar-scale MDI plant in Al Ruwais Industrial City, UAE, assessing renewable energy access and supplies of key raw materials such as chlorine and ammonia.

The initiatives, supported by XRG, aim to strengthen global supply resilience and meet growing MDI demand across Asia, the Middle East and other key markets.
