Introduction:
Neste has successfully commissioned a new upgrading plant for liquefied waste plastic (LWP) at its Porvoo refinery in Finland. This €111 million investment represents a key step forward in expanding chemical recycling, enabling the production of high-quality feedstock for the plastics and chemicals sectors.
Features:
The plant has an annual processing capacity of up to 150,000 tonnes of liquefied waste plastic, making it the world’s largest LWP upgrading plant. Production will be increased gradually over time.
The plant helps bridge the quality gap between crude liquefied plastic waste and the high-grade drop-in raw materials required by the petrochemical sector.
Although mechanical recycling remains important, it is often constrained by the quality of waste. This new plant is designed to handle oils derived from more complex waste streams, including multi-layer packaging, mixed plastics, and contaminated materials.
Integrated into the existing refinery, the plant upgrades liquefied waste plastic, with the output then co-processed alongside fossil-based materials. A mass balance method is used to assign the recycled content to Neste RE™ products. By using recycled Neste RE™, it is possible to reduce virgin fossil resource use by more than 70% (abiotic depletion) and cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by over 35% when compared to incineration and the use of fossil-based feedstock in plastics production.
