Introduction:

Selenis, a global producer of high-performance speciality polyesters and part of the IMG Group, has announced a major expansion of its industrial headquarters in Portalegre.

Features:

The expansion strengthens Selenis’ role in the shift towards a circular polymer economy. By incorporating advanced technologies, the project will increase production capacity while improving the plant’s energy efficiency and lowering carbon emissions, supporting the rising global demand for sustainable materials.

The company described the expansion as a significant step forward, enabling it to double capacity to address growing demand while remaining aligned with evolving European regulatory requirements. Circularity, the company noted, is moving beyond theory and becoming a practical industrial approach.

Under the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), all packaging placed on the EU market must be recyclable by 2030, with strict targets for recycled content and traceability. In addition, updates to the Single‑Use Plastics Directive now recognise advanced recycling and certified mass-balance approaches, including chemically recycled content, as valid methods to meet these targets.

The investment is expected to double the site’s production capacity by the third quarter of 2027, accelerating the industrial development of bio-based, medical-grade and circular co-polyesters.
